City Watch

A project of the City of Parksville & CUPE Local 401 Workers

City Watch is a program developed as a partnership between the workers of the City of Parksville, members of CUPE Local 401, and the RCMPolice. It is designed to prevent and reduce crime in the City by encouraging city workers to be alert to activities they might witness in the course of their daily jobs.

Every day, City workers are assigned, by their employer, the City of Parksville, to work in nearly every part of the City.

Being on the alert, keeping their eyes and ears open and reporting to the RCMP, activities that appear to be criminal or even suspicious, can all be done from City vehicles through the City's dispatch centre. City workers might well help to reduce the small crime rate or even prevent accidents in our community.

    ENRICHED PUBLIC SERVICE

City workers are already being paid to be out and about in Parksville. Our work takes us from streets, to schools, to parks, to sewers, to back alleys. Keeping alert and aware of what is going on around us is something we can do at no additional cost.

Every City truck is already equipped with a two-way radio system. So if suspicious activities or accidents are observed, City workers can call central dispatch and report the activity or accident. In turn, the dispatcher will call the RCMP through 911 immediately!

    GETTING TO KNOW YOU

Many City workers are tasked to projects in and around City schools on a regular basis. As a matter of course workers assigned to school areas will be introduced to the teachers, children and parents so that they'll be recognizable should the need for help arise.

TRAINED IN THE BASICS OF OCCUPATIONAL FIRST AID

Many full-time City workers have received the Occupational First Aid Level 1 certification which includes:

    • Emergency scene management
    • Artificial respiration
    • Choking adult
    • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
    • Severe bleeding
    • Shock
    • Minor wound care

    WHAT ARE WE WATCHING FOR?

According to statistics, most crimes are committed during the day when people are at work. But of course, City of Parksville workers are out and about doing their work both day and night. So while you are at work, so are City workers and while they're at it, they can keep an eye on things.

    WE ARE COMMUNITY!

The majority of City of Parksville employees also live in Parksville. So there is a vested interest in ensuring that Parksville is known as a safe and friendly community.
